A Louisville basketball player shot free throws underhanded at the FIBA U19 championship

Chinanu Onuaku, a 6-10 center at Louisville, had a terrible free-throw shooting percentage in his freshman year. So bad, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Rick Pitino encouraged him to completely change his style to shoot them underhanded, like Rick Barry. This is also known as a granny shot.

“He’s sacrificing the way it looks for the result,” U19 coach Sean Miller told the newspaper. “It says a lot about him.”

At the FIBA U19 World Championship Onaku used the style on an international stage in a game against Iran — where he finished the game 2-for-4 from the line.
